Raising a child: what an infinite joy, what a thrill ... but what a responsibility. Am I doing it right? How to make him a happy and healthy adult? And who do you respect others? From the book "Healthy and happy children for dummies" by Giulia Settimo, Hoepli edition, we have collected ten tips for all parents. From the time to devote to him, to the importance of making him independent.

1- Spend some time for him

When he is awake, try to set aside time to entertain the baby in a pleasant way. Also taking advantage of some daily operations such as bath time or diaper change.

Often it doesn't take much to make your baby calm and happy, even when some minor inconvenience such as indigestion or diaper rash occurs. The website www.parenting.com ...

2 - Place cheerful and colorful objects near him

The baby can look (and not just see) from three months upwards. He turns his head, widens his field of vision. He is able to focus his gaze on objects that attract his attention (especially if they are round and with bright colors is better!). (Read also: the third month of the newborn)

His curiosity increases day by day and he begins to explore his surroundings. It's the time he starts to appreciate the objects hanging from the crib and the rattles that are placed in his hand.

Bring bright and colorful objects close to him: he will begin to remember colors he has already seen and to recognize new games that will gradually become part of his world.

3 - Feed it in a fair and balanced way

The health of the child also depends on what he eats. First with milk and then with new foods, the baby acquires the nutrients he needs to grow. But what matters to him it is not the food itself, but the nutrients.

Mothers often worry if their children are not eating fruit or vegetables, but the same substances can be supplemented by eating legumes, fruit, eggs and dairy products.

Furthermore, hunger and appetite are not a reliable yardstick: a child who eats a lot does not necessarily feed properly. His diet could be low in basic foods and instead full of snacks and snacks after hours.

Remember: good eating habits are learned from a young age.

4 - Little TV and with rules

No to TV as a babysitter. With a child, she should always be used in moderation and setting rules respected by all. Also remember that TV to watch and listen to passively is not suitable for children under two, who need active learning, that is, to interact with the speaker. Although they seem to be following her with interest, they are actually "mesmerized" by her.

Children from 2 to 4 years old should limit themselves to watching TV no more than 10-20 minutes a day and always in the company of an adult.

- rules to be imposed in general?

  • TV shouldn't distract children from more important activities
  • it should not be used to "keep them good"
  • it should not interfere with mealtimes or bedtime
  • you do not look at the evening before going to sleep

5 - The four rules to keep you well

  1. it is important to move, it would be perfect every day, between playing outdoors and walking. To combat a sedentary lifestyle in front of TV and tablets
  2. eat more fruits and vegetables. These foods should be consumed often, moderating the portions of rice, pasta, potatoes and bread. Limit junk food.
  3. no to sweet drinks. In fact, sugary drinks promote overweight and should not be allowed more than once a week
  4. sleep. Babies should sleep at least 10 hours at night. Discover the table of children's sleep hours by age.

6 - Get enough sleep!

This point hooks on to the last preceding rule: in childhood it is important get enough sleep. Lack of sleep could promote the tendency to overweight and obesity, as well as increase the risk of diabetes and hypertension.

You learn to sleep from a very young age. The routine changes according to age, but the sleep ritual is always effective. For the little ones it can be: bath, fairy tale and lullaby.

7 - Stay outside

The open spaces offer the possibility of experience all the senses. In contact with nature, children develop interest, curiosity and inner security. And they learn to experience different situations.

8 - Promote autonomy

Let him do things by himself, according to age, to help develop its autonomy. The excessive desire for protection, but also the haste, pushes to help the child too much. So, leave aside the temptation to always replace him and test his abilities. If he tells you that he wants to try something for himself, let him try it (as long as it's not dangerous). Help him feel "great".

9 - Try to trust him

Children are able to face difficulties and always find a way out, they have within them the strength to overcome negative moments, such as sorrows and quarrels. They argue and often make peace alone. It makes no sense to protect them all the time and in an exaggerated way: they have the ability to fend for themselves.

10 - Grow it with an animal

For a child, a four-legged animal is not only a company, but also a "affective mediator". It does him good to see how much attention his parents take care of him and helps them to realize the attention he himself is the object of.

In addition, animals help to understand the natural cycle of life: birth, old age and death. (Read also: How to explain the death of an animal to a child)

In our age, then, some qualities, such as empathy, are little valued. More and more time is spent in front of TVs, tablets and mobile phones, not really learning to relate to others and negotiate one's position. Having an animal therefore helps children understand this complex process. Today we talk about bullying more and more, without realizing that it comes from a lack of empathy.

It is important to make your child understand that your pet is not an object, but a living being, a friend with whom to relate, to know and to respect.

So, finally, don't let him find it under the Christmas tree, as if it were an inanimate object.
