All babies have natural talents. It is above all the task of parents to discover, direct their genius and motivate them. That said, it's not always easy to help little ones stay focused and interested in a passion or attitude. We asked the Australian writer, psychologist and researcher about it Andrew Fuller, Author of the book Unleash your child's genius! How to discover and encourage children's natural talents (Erickson Edizioni), to tell us something more about the manual he composed and designed for parents who wish to help their children to enhance natural qualities and talents, which can always find application beyond the direction taken by their interests and their passions. In addition, Fuller also gave us 10 great tips to help parents keep the "spark of genius" burning in children.

Helping children to improve their natural talents and qualities

As Andrew Fuller explains, the original meaning of the word "genius" has been lost in today's society. “In many places around the world it is generally thought that people are or are not geniuses. What we have forgotten is that people they are not geniuses, people have genius».

We have also forgotten the meaning of the word "education" which comes from the Latin word "educare" which means "to extrapolate". Our goal is, therefore, to extrapolate the inner genius of each child. One of the best ways we can help make our children safe, happy and resilient is to help them understand that they are smart and that they can be successful. This takes us from a world where people feel anxious and fear they will fail to a world where people think about the contribution they can make by developing their inner genius.

Then, the purpose of school, parents and grandparents is to help children discover their inner genius. If I could develop a motto for all schools it would be this: "Everyone gets smart here". Not just some of you, all of you. It would help children understand that each person will be intelligent in his own way. This means that it doesn't make much sense to compare yourself to others. Instead, everyone has to learn how to be even more serious in his own way. "

Why doesn't excelling at school mean being geniuses?

“Everyone knows some adults who are very successful and intelligent in everyday life, but who have not been successful in school. This happens because being "good at school" is not the same as being "good in life". The two things can overlap, of course, but not always ».

How can we understand our son's talent?

“Just imagine what it would be like if all children and their parents knew their strengths and how to use them to build other areas of success. Just imagine what it would be like even if teachers knew their learning-related strengths and modeled their teaching to match their classroom strengths ...

The extensive resilience research I conducted found that students they are successful when they connect, protect and respect each other.

After several years of research, I have developed a website called Mylearningstrenghts which allows students and parents to analyze their strengths, receiving a personalized and free letter outlining their profile. The profile letter "My learning strenghts" outlines the two areas of strongest learning strengths and suggests strategies for using them to develop an area that has yet to become a strength.

The feedback from thousands of students and teachers has already been very positive. Therefore, thanks to this site, a more detailed and easy to read personalized learning plan is available, which illustrates all areas of student learning strength and links them to potential career areas ».

Are there any important skills that children should be taught?

“There are many skills to develop, but most of all know who you are, what you are passionate about and what interests you it is the most powerful "kick-up" to success in life. It's hard to live a happy life if you don't believe in yourself. "

How to encourage children not to lose motivation?

“Children start wanting to learn and then lose motivation if they come to fear failure. By identifying their learning strengths, you can capitalize on areas where they are strong and structure them into powerful areas of expertise. Always remind them that in life it is not necessary to be good at everything».

Tips to help keep the sparks of "genius" alight in children

Here, according to Fuller, are some of the main things all parents can do to give children a boost to success.

  1. You parents be positive and always try to learn new things.
By tackling hobbies, new courses, and discussing new discoveries and ideas, we show our children and grandchildren that learning is interesting and for everyone. Start talking serenely in front of them about shows, interesting facts, discoveries, books. The key idea is that young people know that learning is something that adults do too ».
  2. Create a corner of creativity.
«Choose a corner in your home where children can create projects, works of art, etc. It is not expensive to do so. Additionally, creative geniuses need a place to invent, work, and keep ongoing projects. One of the best ways for children to learn "persistence" is to start a project and then build and improve it over time. Warning: Sometimes it may be necessary to cover everything with a protective sheet. Expect this area to get messy and wild. Becoming a genius does not always involve order and cleanliness ».
  3. Experience + reflection = learning.
«The experiences that we accumulate in our life go to structure our brain. When parents and grandparents involve children in experiences, they help develop their brains. By giving our children new and interesting positive experiences, we stimulate their brain development and make them more intelligent. Asking them to think about the things they have seen or heard solidifies the new experiences in their brains. Also, to really enhance the natural genius of children, it is preferable not to always keep doing the same things. Instead, find ways to do new things, visit new places and experience different ways of seeing the world. "
  4. Look for "weird" ways to connect things.
“Imagination and creativity often equate to ideas that no one else really thinks. You can help stimulate this in the little ones by playing with them to think about some things in different ways. For example, how are the planet Mars and an apple alike? Don't worry if they don't have an answer. The "genius" asks many more questions and gives no answers ».
  5. Know that mistakes are opportunities.
“If you can't go wrong, you can't do anything new either. If children cannot bear to make a mistake, they cannot access their inner creative genius. Help them understand that we all make mistakes. Nobody gets it right the first time they try. In reality, making mistakes is the only way you learn ».
  6. "Stretch" their ideas.
«The contemporary world seems to encourage people to search for answers (usually from Google) and then to stop thinking. Find an antidote to all of this by helping your children to take ideas and "stretch" them. This requires parents and grandparents to have a good sense of humor. In particular, ask the children to choose ideas and apply them in all the strangest ways possible. "Genes" take information from multiple sources, recombine it in new and interesting ways, and apply it in contexts that others have never thought of before. "
  7. Help them develop concentration.
“It's hard to imagine achieving success in one area if you can't learn concentration. Anyone who has learned to ride a bicycle, play a musical instrument, surf a wave or drive a car knows that concentration is a skill we can improve on. Often children are attracted to different things. Notice what catches their attention and work on that. '
  8. Help them learn to plan and make decisions.
Being able to anticipate what is likely to happen as a result of actions is an essential life skill. The ability to look beyond current circumstances and to consider the outcomes of possible courses of action is something that can be taught to children and adolescents. This can be simple. Draw different paths and ask the children, "What do you think will happen if we do this or what would you think would happen if we did?". Our actions have consequences. Decision making is a rare skill. Some people let life happen to them and then express dissatisfaction about where they end up. Help children become "active decision makers" if you want them to have a happy life. Much of the happiness in our lives - where we live, where we work, who we are, our friends and who we are in a relationship - is determined by the decisions we make.. Decisions are like crossroads we encounter in life. Helping children stop, pause and evaluate the likely results of different actions or paths is one of the most powerful things a parent can do to help create a happy life for their child. '
  9. Don't just read to children, but read with them.
“If you are really reading with children, know that it will help them gain interest in the new information. Matching time spent with parents and grandparents with learning time will help them feel the value of the new learning. Even when children are more skilled readers, occasionally sharing a story, reading something interesting from the newspaper, or reciting a poem, proverb or song, will show them that learning is something adults do too. The "genius" is more interested in the things we do not know than in the things we know. And it's very difficult to be intrigued by things you don't know if you don't occasionally see the world from someone else's perspective. Movies and computer games intrigue to some extent, but nothing beats a good book. Even for the most reluctant, it is enough just to read a great book and with them create a different world ».
  10. Let them know how amazing they are.
“Nowadays, we talk about some people who are genius, but we have forgotten that everyone has a genius. Within each person there is an "inner genius", an inner passion, a skill and a desire that we can unlock and extract. As parents and grandparents it is much more important to focus on extracting potential and focusing less on current performance. One of the things successful people say is that they had someone who believed in them when they were kids. When asked how they managed to achieve a remarkable result, successful people often stop and reflect on the fact that no one ever told them they couldn't do it. '
