Acne in pregnancy, what to do

'' If the skin during pregnancy generally becomes more beautiful, pre-existing acne may worsen or unexpected and persistent pimples and cysts may appear, under the pressure of androgen hormones, which predispose mothers-to-be to a bad mood, "says Jonette Elizabeth Keri, professor of dermatology and skin surgery at the University of Miami, Florida.

The advice is to start with over-the-counter topical creams, if that's not enough, you can switch to drugs or phototherapy.

"Excellent results are obtained with azelaic acid which also attenuates hyperpigmentation" says the expert. "If the ointments are not enough you can use some oral antibiotics such as azithromycin, erythromivine and cephalexin prescribed by the doctor. Red and blue light phototherapy is also effective, while lasers are to be avoided ".

Increasing body weight also facilitates the appearance of pimples, recalls the Aad. During pregnancy it is good to wash the skin carefully with warm water and mild detergents, better if in foam.

No scrubs or peeling creams, containing solid particles, because they inflame the skin. Always apply one sunscreen with Spf 30, the most suitable filters are physical ones, such as zinc and titanium.
