Anti-nausea bracelet in pregnancy, how it works
Nausea in pregnancy: when does it start?
Typically (although there is no rule), pregnancy nausea peaks around 12-14 weeks when the HCG hormone is at its highest. By the end of the fourth month it usually disappears spontaneously, although obviously there are people who, suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, suffer from this malaise even in a severe and disabling form for the entire duration of pregnancy.
How anti-nausea bracelets work
The anti-nausea bracelets currently on the market work for acupressione, i.e. without the use of any medicine inside them: acupressure is a pillar of traditional Chinese medicine and is still used today as a non-invasive or painful treatment to decrease the feeling of nausea in many subjects, not only pregnant women but also in cancer patients and in chemotherapy.
Acupressure, as also reported by the study "Acupressure Points and Massage Treatment" published on WebMD, is a way to exert pressure in some specific points, it is used for the gentle treatment of various pathologies, pain and, in fact, nausea. The acupressure stimulation of the anti-nausea bracelets touches the point defined Nei-Kuan which is located on the wrist: this pressure relieves the sensation of nausea from movement by regulating the functioning of the organs located in the thoracic, epigastric and hypochondriac region. Acupressure is often referred to as "acupuncture without needles "because the dynamics are similar and so is the relief that is obtained. The only difference that is substantial is that acupuncture needs an expert to be practiced, while acupressure does not: indeed, the bracelets in commerce allow constant pressure against the nerve center, making the process absolutely automatic.
Anti-nausea bracelets, how long do they last and are they bad for mom?
In the research "Effect of acupressure by Sea-Bands on nausea and vomiting of pregnancy" published in the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic & Neonatal Nursing reports the main studies on the effects of anti-nausea bracelets in pregnancy, defining them as "non-invasive, inexpensive, safe and most of the time efficient in the treatment of nausea ". The research dates back to 2001 and there are few studies that attest to the real effectiveness of these bracelets, which however, as they do not contain medicines, do not release any active ingredients that can cause problems for pregnant women.
Instead, there are many studies on acupressure as a natural remedy for nausea, not just in pregnancy. For example "Acupressure and vitamin B6 to relieve nausea and vomiting in pregnancy: a randomized study" published in the Archives of Gynecology and Obstetric. In that case we compared the effects of vitamin B6, an ally in pregnancy against nausea according to many evidences. The research pointed out that there was no specific evidence for the greater effectiveness of either, although neither actually hurt the pregnant woman.
It is no coincidence that anti-nausea bracelets that work on acupressure are also used on children from three years of age, and are effective in anticipation of long car journeys as long as they are placed in the right place and used correctly.
How long does the effect of anti-nausea bracelets last during pregnancy?
Those on the market can be used both preventively and as needed. There are no deadlines, as acupressure works mechanically and you just need to place the cuff in the right place to feel the benefits within 5 minutes.
