Choosing the first shoes

Movement is essential for the baby to have healthy feet. Let your little one walk barefoot as much as possible. It not only trains the bone structure and muscles of the feet, but also maintains elastic tendons and ligaments, allows free support and avoids flattening of the feet.

Foot shoes have only a protective function: they must protect against cold, humidity and prevent injuries. The foot does not need supports; the optimal shoe adapts to the movement of the foot, not the other way around.

Why do the feet have to have a lot of space?

If the foot has too little space in the shoe, it cannot rest well

Wrong shoes can cause an unnatural position of the toes, in most cases an oblique position of the big toe. The inside of the shoe must therefore be at least one centimeter longer than the foot and the sole must be as flexible as possible. Pointed toe shoes with too little free space for the toes are therefore an absolute taboo: the space should be wide and high enough.

When to put the first shoes?

Don't be in a hurry to buy your first shoes. Feet need freedom to grow optimally. You shouldn't be tempted by those cute little shoes… your child's feet are very well protected inside the socks. And this is also true when children start to stand up or when they are already taking their first steps. The non-slip pads are sufficient as a support. Shoes should only be used when the child can walk well on his own.

How many shoes does a child need?

Two pairs of good shoes are enough. Anyone who has found a pair of comfortable and beautiful shoes for their child can buy a replacement pair of the same. Because even the feet sweat in hot weather.

Do children need slippers?

In case of smooth and cold surfaces, slippers are used. If possible, let your child walk around barefoot or with non-slip socks: this strengthens the foot muscles.

And can used shoes be used?

Experts are not thrilled when using pre-used shoes, but if the following conditions are met, there is nothing against it:

  • Shoes also fit in width. It means they are neither too loose nor too tight.

  • The inherited shoes have been put on for so little that the footprint of the previous owner is not yet visible.

  • The leather has not yet formed support folds that hurt the feet of the current owner.

  • The sole, in the heel area, has not yet been eaten on one side.

How fast do baby feet grow?

The feet grow very quickly and jerky. Between the ages of three and six, the feet grow two or three sizes per year. In school-age children we still talk about one or two measures. A shoe size corresponds to 6,6 millimeters. Check if the feet have grown: in the case of children from 1 to 3 years, every 6 - 8 weeks, from 3 to 6 years, every 4 - 6 months.

How do I find the optimal shoe?

Children's feet need enough freedom of movement inside the shoes. The perfect shoe must therefore be the right length, width and height. Likewise it should be made of breathable material, as well as light and elastic. However, a good shoe doesn't have to be made of very expensive leather. Nowadays there are also very good quality sneakers available in breathable material.
