Is it better to give birth in a larger and better equipped ward but far from home or in a nearby hospital, even if small and without a neonatal ward?
The Ministry of Health has long since given its answer: the reorganization of the Operational Units of Obstetrics and Pediatrics / Neonatology was started in 2022 and the closures of the centers that do not exceed 500 births in a year are gradually being prepared.
Safety reasons (ward reliability, staff numbers, absence of intensive neonatology) but also economic reorganization. Exceptions are foreseen for the worst served areas and for the mountain areas, but these are cases to be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
The Marche, one of the regions most affected by the "spending review" on birth points, is at the center of the news these days: in fact, the TAR has just rejected the appeal of the local committees, which asked for the protection of the birth wards in the small hospitals of San Severino and Fabriano.
The protests of citizens, trade unions, medical personnel for the inconvenience and economic expenditure that future mothers will have to support with trips of 30 or 40 kilometers to reach the first adequately equipped hospital were of no use.
