The sugar requirement over the course of the nine months remains more or less the same as it was before pregnancy, ie about 55-60% of the daily caloric intake. During the wait, however, try to minimize simple sugars, that is refined or cane sugar, and the foods that contain it, such as drinks and sweets, because they cause a surge in blood sugar, especially if consumed on an empty stomach. Instead, give preference to complex sugars, i.e. carbohydrates (mainly represented by bread and pasta), which cause blood sugar to rise much slower.

  • Pasta and rice Pasta or rice can also be eaten every day, preferably at lunch, in an amount equal to about 80 grams at a time (raw weight) if the second is not consumed. "If you want, you can also combine a second course based on proteins (but in this case the dose of pasta must be reduced to 50 g)" specifies Dr. Scatozza, "however, during pregnancy it is difficult to make a complete meal, especially towards the last few months. As you go along, in fact, the gastric filling capacity decreases due to the increase in the volume of the belly, plus digestion becomes more difficult due to progesterone, a hormone that slows down gastrointestinal motility (the stomach i.e. it empties more slowly) and reduces the production of gastric juices. For these reasons, better to eat pasta for lunch and a protein food for dinner. Pasta and rice can also be replaced by other cereals, such as spelled, barley, millet, according to one's tastes ".

  • Bread If you do not eat pasta, you need another carbohydrate: 60 g of bread, white or, if you have problems with constipation, wholemeal, or breadsticks and crackers (30 g), perfect especially if you suffer from nausea, as they are drier and therefore more digestible.
