The tricks to feed the selective child

For many families, mealtime is a war. There is no breakfast, lunch or dinner that gets away from it, in fact three out of ten children are selective, that is, they always want to eat the same things, they refuse to taste new foods and eat little fruit and vegetables. These behaviors as they grow can lead to disorders such as anorexia or obesity.

It is therefore important that families follow a path of food education that stimulates children to taste and discover new foods without fear.

Advice from the Bambino Gesù hospital in the city.

1) Never force the child to finish what's on the plate

According to the experts of the children's hospital, children who are forced to finish everything on their plate feel great discomfort. The imposition of parents, perhaps done for a good purpose, often has the opposite effect and as a reaction arouses in the small negative feelings towards food. So better let the children eat only what they feel like. Over time they will learn to eat more.

2) Keep the television off during meals and eat all together

From a study presented by the Child Jesus it emerged that

  • 38% of children aged 1 to 3 eat in front of the television
  • and 25% are not at the table with mum and dad.

According to experts these bad habits they favor selective and neophobic behavior (aversion to new foods) to food. Therefore it is important that parents do not allow distractions such as television or video games during meals. When it's time for dinner, the whole family has to sit at the table and share the meal in peace.

3) The children's meal must be the same as that of mum and dad

Adults with their behaviors are exemplary models for children. It is therefore important that parents have the same diet as children, which must be healthy and balanced, in order to positively influence them.

A child cannot be expected to eat soup while parents dine on something more appetizing. Better to choose a recipe that satisfies the taste of mom and dad and is also good for the little ones.

4) Re-propose a food you don't like by cooking it differently

If a child really does not want to eat a certain food, instead of eliminating it forever from the table, it must be repeatedly proposed, perhaps using different recipes.

Repeated consumption, experts say, educates children's taste for the food itself.

A child who does not want vegetables, seeing them every day on the table, presented in different ways, will eventually succumb to the curiosity to taste them and over time will get used to their taste, even finding it good.

5) Reduce the consumption of animal proteins

The Bambin Gesù survey showed that today's children consume too much animal protein (excessive consumption leads to obesity).

So for a correct diet it is advisable to reduce meat, sausages, cheeses and eggs.

On the other hand, the consumption of vegetables and fruit is good: only 17% of parents declare that they almost never manage to make them eat them. Too bad that this habit is lost around 4-5 years.

6) Involve the child in the kitchen

Experts recommend organizing a child's familiarization course with food. A good idea is to take the child to do the shopping, prepare dinner together, taste the dishes they are cooking. In short, transforming cooking and meals into a moment of play.
