International day of the family: why it is celebrated

The Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 and reflects the importance that the international community attaches to families. International Day offers an opportunity to promote awareness of family issues and to raise awareness of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

The sustainable development goals

On September 25, 2022, the 193 member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the Sustainable Development Goals, a set of 17 goals aimed at eliminating poverty, discrimination, abuse and preventable deaths, addressing environmental destruction and inaugurating an era of development for all people, everywhere. Families and family-oriented policies and programs are vital to achieving many of these goals.

International family day: activities with children

How to explain this day to the little ones? By creating activities to do together! In honor of this important day, we've created a list of 4 bonding activities you can do with them.

Plant a family garden

Enjoy a day outdoors in the sun and plant a family garden. Kids are spending more and more time indoors these days, so encourage your family to bond together by digging a patch to plant flowers or vegetables in the back yard. Teach your children how to create, nurture and sustain life, a truly valuable thing for all children to learn. They will enjoy getting their hands dirty while also learning to be patient and persevere, through tasks like keeping the garden grass free, watered and healthy. It is never too late to teach your children the joy of creating a beautiful garden or how to grow their own food.

Create a family meal together

Some say home is where the heart is, and the kitchen is where the family gathers at the end of the day. It is the place where your family can gather to devour delicious food while having a chat. Studies have shown that children who eat together with their families are even less likely to develop depression or eating disorders. Additionally, having regular conversations during meals is linked to better communication skills between children and parents, as well as an increase in self-confidence. So use this day to get creative with your kids.

Create family stories

Your family's stories are unique: no one else in the world has the same story. Telling past and present family stories with your children not only brings the family together, but creates a timeless bridge between generations. Spend the day sitting in the living room with your family and tell as many stories as possible about your family history. The richer and more detailed, the better! Not only will your children be fascinated by listening to their great grandparents and beyond, but they will also have cherished memories they will never forget. There are so many benefits to sharing family stories that go beyond bonding.

Backyard camping

Another great way to get the whole family outdoors is to plan a fun night camping. While the holidays are always a good bonding experience, you may be surprised at how enthusiastic your children are at the idea of camping out in a meadow. Camping is a fun experience for the whole family, even for your pets! All you need is a tent, some blankets, pillows, snacks and you are ready for adventure!
