There are two types of leukorrhea:
- Physiological leukorrhea
- Inflammatory leukorrhea
1. Physiological leukorrhea
It is common in almost all women and is caused by a defense mechanism in the body to restore hormonal balance. It is defined as "physiological" due to the fact that the vaginal discharge occur when estrogen levels rise.
2. Inflammatory leukorrhea
It occurs when there is vaginal swelling or mucosal congestion in that area. Most often the leaks are white or yellowish in color and emit a bad odor indicating ainfection. This type of leukorrhea also includes vaginal discharge caused by sexually transmitted diseases.

Leucorrhea manifests itself with some vaginal discharge more or less viscous, whitish in color.
La leukorrhea is common in pregnancy, during ovulation and when the concentration of estrogens, female hormones, is altered, ie in menopause or when taking a contraceptive pill. What are the causes of leukorrhea?
The increase in cervical secretions varies from woman to woman. Some women have such mucus production that they sometimes require the use of vaginal douches, particularly at the time ofovulation (in this case it speaks of premenstrual leukorrhea) when hormonal activity increases exponentially. It generally occurs in the middle of the ovulatory cycle and is a sign of ovulation.
In the period of sexual maturity, secretions can come from the vulva, vagina, cervix or fundus. When the discharge is associated with intense itching, the cause may be a 'Trichomonas, Chlamydia or Candida infection.
The leucorrea in menopausa: even in the postmenopausal period, in fact, clear losses can be observed. They are usually related to estrogen deficiency or senile vaginitis.
Finally, there is the leucorrea gravidica. When this disorder occurs during pregnancy it could cause concern in the expectant mother. In fact, it is one physiological condition which depends on the fact that, in this period of life, there are consistent hormonal changes.
