Leucorrhea is due to a hormonal decompensation of estrogen

It is defined leucorrhea and it is a very common disorder of the female genital tract: it is characterized by white losses, not blood.
Leukorrhea is not a disease, but a symptom: it is essentially due to one hormonal decompensation of estrogen.
It is a common condition in pregnancy, known as leucorrea gravidica, but sometimes it can be caused by a 'bacterial infection or fungal of the vagina or cervix or it can also be physiological, that is, not dependent on any infection.

What are the types of leukorrhea?

There are two types of leukorrhea:



  1. Physiological leukorrhea
  2. Inflammatory leukorrhea

1. Physiological leukorrhea

It is common in almost all women and is caused by a defense mechanism in the body to restore hormonal balance. It is defined as "physiological" due to the fact that the vaginal discharge occur when estrogen levels rise.

2. Inflammatory leukorrhea

It occurs when there is vaginal swelling or mucosal congestion in that area. Most often the leaks are white or yellowish in color and emit a bad odor indicating ainfection. This type of leukorrhea also includes vaginal discharge caused by sexually transmitted diseases.

What are the symptoms of leukorrhea?

Leucorrhea manifests itself with some vaginal discharge more or less viscous, whitish in color.



La leukorrhea is common in pregnancy, during ovulation and when the concentration of estrogens, female hormones, is altered, ie in menopause or when taking a contraceptive pill. Leukorrhea associated with ainfectioninstead, it is always accompanied by pruritus and manifestations such as irritation, redness and swelling vulvar, accompanied by pain in the lower abdomen.

The pathogens most commonly responsible for the infection are: CandidaGardnerella, Trichomonas, Chlamydia e Micoplasmi.

Often a woman suffering from leucorrhea sometimes it also has these symptoms:

  • Feeling of weakness and lethargy
  • Headache
  • Muscular pains

In case of increased whitish secretions together with symptoms such as weakness and itching, a doctor should be consulted.

What are the causes of leukorrhea?

The increase in cervical secretions varies from woman to woman. Some women have such mucus production that they sometimes require the use of vaginal douches, particularly at the time ofovulation (in this case it speaks of premenstrual leukorrhea) when hormonal activity increases exponentially. It generally occurs in the middle of the ovulatory cycle and is a sign of ovulation.

In the period of sexual maturity, secretions can come from the vulva, vagina, cervix or fundus. When the discharge is associated with intense itching, the cause may be a 'Trichomonas, Chlamydia or Candida infection.

The leucorrea in menopausa: even in the postmenopausal period, in fact, clear losses can be observed. They are usually related to estrogen deficiency or senile vaginitis. 

Finally, there is the leucorrea gravidica. When this disorder occurs during pregnancy it could cause concern in the expectant mother. In fact, it is one physiological condition which depends on the fact that, in this period of life, there are consistent hormonal changes.

What are the remedies for leukorrhea?

The first thing to do to prevent genital disorders is to have it correct Personal care. In addition, also pay attention to the act of evacuation: you must never clean yourself from the anal area to the vaginal one, but vice versa, to avoid contamination of bacteria.

For a physiological leukorrhea, that is, not supported by bacterial and / or mycotic agents, exist on the market ointments, douches or pessaries vaginal that help to relieve discomfort, even if vaginal douches especially should be used only for a short time and under the advice of the gynecologist.

Other natural remedies for leucorrhea are:

  • a mallow herbal tea used as a vaginal douche for internal use, it is effective as a soothing and anti-inflammatory
  • take a 125 g serving of yogurt natural to promote the correct development of the vaginal bacterial flora
  • apply a gynecological cream to the calendula: it is a phytotherapeutic remedy useful in case of leucorrhea because it acts locally as an antipruritic and, moreover, has a proven antiseptic action
