Medicines for anxiety and depression in pregnancy

Again, a myth that needs to be dispelled: in pregnancy, anxiety disorders and depressive disorders can be cured, whether they are disorders already present before the pregnancy itself, or whether they have just arisen. The important thing is that this always happens below strict control by the specialist and minimum indispensable dosage.

For the anxiety disorders, the drugs of first choice are benzodiazepines, followed by tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, imipramine, notriptyline) and by SSRIs (citalopram and sertraline). For the depressive disorders, the first choice is tricyclic antidepressants followed by SSRIs.

In agreement with the doctor, it is advisable to stop taking it two to three weeks before giving birth, as these medicines could cause irritability and mild breathing problems for the baby.

Finally, it should be emphasized that this type of disorder can also benefit from psychotherapy, as well as drug therapy.
