Mother's milk with a bottle

Interview with Jule Friedrich, midwife specializing in breastfeeding.

When can you start using a bottle to feed your baby?

The baby should be breastfed for the first six weeks. Later, when you are used to breastfeeding, you can continue with the bottle. If the mother wishes, she can sometimes give the baby a bottle, so she learns to drink from the teat. Babies who in the first three or four months were only breastfed often refuse the bottle later: they are unable to use it because it requires another technique.

Breast milk can be kept in the fridge for at least two days. In the freezer for six months

How is breast milk stored?

Preferably in the cold: in the refrigerator at a temperature between +4 and +6 degrees, in the freezer at -18 degrees. If the milk is consumed within 6-8 hours it can be kept at room temperature.

How long is the maternal maternal preserved?

For healthy babies, breast milk can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 72 hours, or three days. Care should be taken not to store milk in the compartments on the refrigerator door, but rather in the innermost spaces or at the bottom. There the temperature is in fact more regular. For babies born premature or sick, milk should be kept in the refrigerator for a maximum of 48 hours. The milk can be stored in the freezer for up to six months.

What do you need to pay attention to to freeze it?

For infants up to six months it is necessary to use sterilized containers for freezing. If the child is older, normal containers can be used. If you are collecting milk, it is important not to mix fresh milk that is still warm with that which is already frozen, as if it comes into contact with warm milk, the frozen milk could melt.

How is breast milk thawed properly?

First you have to let the frozen milk melt in the refrigerator or at room temperature. When it is liquid, it can be stored in the refrigerator in a closed container for up to 24 hours. If milk has already been drawn, only for 12 hours. Preferably heat the milk slowly in a water bath up to a maximum of 37 degrees. In this way, all its main components are preserved.

Do not heat the milk in the microwave - it may be too hot for the baby

Is it possible to give the baby warmed milk even later?

Warmed milk should be given to the baby within an hour. You don't have to reheat a second time. If you don't use it or there's some left, don't throw it away - breast milk is a great bath product for babies. Then you can simply pour it into the tub at the next bath.

Is it possible to heat milk in the microwave?

No. Baby food should not be heated in the microwave. The most valuable components would be lost in this way. Furthermore, the microwave would heat the milk unevenly and could still be too hot for the baby and therefore cause burns. It is best to heat baby food in a water bath.

Can breast milk and formula milk be mixed?

It is not recommended. It is best for babies' stomachs to receive the two types of milk one after the other. So first the breast milk, then the burp and change the baby to give him a little break. Then give him the formula.

Does bottle feeding have to be an exception or can it also be a way to involve the father more?

Until the sixth week it is good to avoid the bottle. The father can cuddle him, take him for a walk, change him or give him a bath and thus establish his relationship with his son. In the beginning it doesn't have to happen through nutrition. But it depends on the circumstances: if the mother works or wants to go to the cinema, the father can replace her. In this case, breast milk from the bottle is a good alternative.
