When you mention pancera, your mind immediately goes to those kinds of "instruments of torture" that, at the bottom of a drawer, more or less all of us have. What a pain when we decide to contain the bacon a little too prominent and slip into that little black dress that we like so much! A completely different scenario opens up if we talk about pancera in pregnancy. Are you an essential accessory or can you do without it? What models are there? When can it be used? Belly during pregnancy: yes or no?

Like so many other topics, this is also one of the most debated topics in the context of pregnancy, a bit like sushi, to make a somewhat risky comparison. There are those who are in favor, those who are against, those who abstain from any judgment. Let's start with a fundamental consideration: the belly in pregnancy is not containing. That is, it is not used to compress the belly (it is rather useless, as well as potentially dangerous for the fetus) because the function is absolutely different. 

The belly is intended to support the belly when it becomes bulky and heavy. It is therefore a support to make the expectant mother feel better when struggling with one of the most classic ailments of pregnancy: back pain. The problem is right there and pancera is, at least in part, a solution. 



Back pain in pregnancy 

Back pain is one of the most common annoyances of pregnancy. Although not always on an ongoing basis, almost all pregnant women suffer from it. It is not very common in the first trimester of pregnancy, while it becomes more common in the second trimester and particularly in the third trimester when the belly and extra pounds are felt. 

The causes of back pain in pregnancy related to the musculoskeletal system are many:  

  • the center of gravity is shifted forward. 
  • The lumbar muscles are called to a greater effort. 
  • The lumbar curve (lordosis) is accentuated. 
  • The abdominal muscles are gradually stretched and have less ability to "balance" the action of the lumbar muscles in keeping the back "steady". 
  • The intervertebral discs are subjected to a greater load and are more likely to protrude from their natural location forming a hernia. 
  • The sacroiliac joints are subjected to gradual and increasing stress.

However, there are also other triggers: 

  • hormonal factors.
  • Vascular causes.
  • Sedentary lifestyle.
  • Heavy back work.

A different form of back pain is sciatica, a pain that runs down the entire leg (or both), sometimes associated with falling asleep and tingling with cramps in the calves.

The benefits of pancera in pregnancy

Using a belly during pregnancy (in the times and in the ways that we will now see) can have various advantages: 

  • reduction of back pain.
  • Improvement of posture.
  • Greater stability.
  • More fluidity in the movements. 

Since when to use pancera in pregnancy

The answer to this question seems obvious enough. The belly should be used when the abdomen becomes larger and the weight begins to fall on the back, creating some problems. Typically this happens from the second trimester of pregnancy onwards. In fact, there is no reason to buy or use it first. It is not said that it will be useful. 



How long to use pancera in pregnancy

Do not do your own thing: if you think that pancera can be useful, ask your gynecologist for advice. To tell the truth, in some cases he could suggest it directly, explaining how to use it correctly. Yes, because the watchword is moderation. In short, we must not exaggerate.

Those who actually benefit from using pancera must follow an important precaution: it should not be kept all day. It is true that the feeling of well-being could make you tempted to never take it off, but you don't. In this way, the back muscles do not work because they are supported by the belly and, in the long run, this would lead to their weakening. But they would not be the only muscle groups to be affected. The pelvic floor also does not train and the risk is that of urinary incontinence. 

So how long should you keep it on? Only for the time really needed. For example, if you go out for a walk, if you carry out a profession that requires you to stand a long time, if you have to do a little heavier work at home (are you really sure you want to try your hand at this?) . When you come back or finish you will have to remove it. 

Types of pancera for pregnancy 

There are various models of pancere and similar products on the market. The fabrics are always soft enough and should never be tight, but on the contrary be very comfortable. Here are the main models:


  • sheath: protects the baby bump and supports the lumbar area. It usually consists of a panty and a band that opens and closes with velcro, thus adapting to the growth of the abdomen. The baby bump is uncovered.
  • Belly: has the same function as the girdle, but usually it is a single piece that reaches under the breast and covers the entire belly. 
  • Band: it is a simple velcro strip that is placed over the normal briefs and under the belly, so as to support it.

The alternatives to buy a pancera are many: they range from pharmacies to health care, from shops specialized in pregnancy and early childhood to online shops. Just choose.

This is a controversial issue because not everyone (gynecologists and obstetricians) is inclined to use it after childbirth. There are those who say that it is good support and that it helps the recovery. This would be especially true if you have had a caesarean section. By compressing the abdomen, the belly would hold the stitches tightly and the mother would be able to move better. 

On the other hand, this product is banned. It would not allow the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles to normalize, nor would the uterus contract well, so that it would return to its normal discharge. 

What to do then? Ask your gynecologist for an opinion.
