Megapixel Matter?
If you think one camera is better than another just because it has "more megapixels", unfortunately wrong. But you are in good company! Many believe it. In short, a typical marketing trap. In reality, this value indicating the resolution (i.e. the number of dots that form the image), is especially important for the size of the paper prints. And today most of the compact cameras in circulation, starting with the basic ones, now have at least 12 megapixels which are fine for all the most popular print formats without graying the image.

Watch out for the lenses
We don't go into technical explanations but a very small lens captures less light and therefore "produces" less beautiful images. Check that the lens is not tiny and try to see the manufacturer's name engraved around the lens: trust the historical brands of photography. Also check the box on the box focal length: ignore the first hard to understand value and read the following indication like "equivalent to 36-360 mm in 35 mm format". In this case, for example, it means that the lens corresponds to a classic 35 mm which becomes ten times more powerful thanks to the optical zoom (10x).
Never without!
Don't give up on image stabilizer, does not particularly affect the price, and is particularly useful for avoiding (or at least limiting) the annoying blur effect, very common when shooting with miniature cameras and, often, a little difficult to grip firmly.
Simplify your life
Among the automatic functions, check that there is one for the face detection (often called Face Detection), now very common on all models (excluding the slightly old ones) which is very useful for taking portraits on the fly. Equally interesting is the option that recognizes motion (Motion Detection) and "tracks itself" the subject to get the best shot.
Watch and shoot
Most compacts have a LCD display of at least 3 inches (XX cm), avoid the smaller ones because they make it less easy to frame. But above all, in the shop, do a little quality test on the fly. Orient the screen towards the darkest area and observe what happens: if the image "moves" swirling and you see a sort of flicker, like the TV when it doesn't work, the quality is not the best. Ask to view other models and do not listen to the salesman who will tell you that inside it is perfectly normal! If you are willing to spend more (a lot more), keep in mind that some manufacturers have returned to equip the latest cameras with the optical viewfinder, which disappeared a few years ago to make way for larger and larger displays. Under the August sun, perhaps on the beach, the viewfinder is a great ally and often more useful than the screen that you may not see well in blinding light.
