The importance of physical activity in pregnancy

There are two fundamental indications that experts recommend to those who are expecting a baby: eat well (i.e. in a varied and balanced way) e do physical activity. It doesn't take much from this point of view: that's enough walking for half an hour a day, but in the days of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, this is not possible. And more generally there may be other situations in which expectant mothers prefer not to go out to walk.





This does not mean that one should be given up healthy physical activity, rather. We asked Chiara Mandò, fitness instructor and researcher in nutrition sciences at the University of our city, where he mainly deals with molecular research on the pathologies of pregnancy, with preparing a program of "home" exercises for the pregnant women who follow us.

The result are three videos, one for each trimester of pregnancy, with a series of exercises to face with your favorite music in the background, a nice smile on the lips and attention to listening to your body and its needs.

Exercises to do at home during pregnancy

The program, which can also be carried out in very small homes, is dedicated to healthy women who have an uncomplicated pregnancy (those who suffer from some specific problem are invited to consult their doctor before starting any training) and it is also aimed at those who are not used to playing sports.



"The important thing - underlines Mandò - is to always respect the body and its needs. Which does not mean not to struggle, but not to exaggerate and take the time necessary to carry out the activities or to recover after having done them".

 

There are two main objectives of the program: keep metabolism active to improve the functioning of the mother-placenta-fetus "system" e stimulate the muscular system, which will become more and more useful as the pregnancy progresses and during childbirth.
