Changes during the menstrual cycle
During the period, the endometrium undergoes various modifications.
The secretive endometrium
In particular: it defines itself secretive the endometrium which is completing its full maturation, to prepare for a possible pregnancy. This secretory phase coincides with the luteal phase of the ovarian cycle and runs from the day of ovulation to the day of arrival of menstruation, if there was no conception.
During the secretory phase, a series of glands in the endometrium produce a milky substance rich in a sugar, the glycogen, which nourishes the endometrium to prepare it to accommodate a possible fertilized egg.
The secretory endometrium in ultrasound scans
In echography the secretory endometrium is recognized by the fact that it appears thicker and whitish, due to the presence of the milky liquid rich in glycogen secreted by the glands.
If fertilization does not occur, the endometrium flakes off giving rise to menstruation.
