First shoes

Our mothers and fathers will probably remember the orthopedic shoes that they made us wear as children, convinced, as it was a few decades ago, that they were the most suitable footwear for first steps. "Today it is established that to perform his first walking experiments, the foot must be 'attacked' as little as possible " highlights Gaetano Pagnotta, formerly in charge of High Specialization in congenital and rare diseases of the skeleton of the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in the city.

"The foot, like the hand, is a sensory terminal," he adds. "The foot needs contact with the ground so that the boy or girl receives thousands and continuous sensory stimuli fundamental to understand where it is. So we must avoid as much as possible to box the foot which, on the contrary, must be kept free so that it can transmit the knowledge of the surrounding world ".

The shoes when you leave the house

"It is clear - Pagnotta points out - that when you go out and the child is standing and walking, the shoe is needed: it has a protective and support function. But it must be soft and flexible. So far be it from us the concept of the corrective shoe".

At home, green light for the bare foot.

When at home, if the weather conditions allow it, the child should be able to move barefoot, or with non-slip socks, with non-slip rubber pads, which ensure good contact with the ground while keeping the foot warm.

"It is essential - Pagnotta points out - that when the child places his foot on the ground he has the sensation of stability, otherwise he will not walk or it hurts".

In summer: walk on the sand

In the summer, on the beach, it's fine to let them walk on the sand, which, thanks to its irregularities, offers a good gym to contract the muscles of the foot better and send the right sensory feedback to the brain. And if they fall, they will certainly not get hurt and will learn to get up on their own and continue trying to walk more and more quickly.
