Strawberries for children: when is the right season

The strawberry season begins in late spring but re-flowering strawberries are harvested until autumn. Eating seasonal fruit is synonymous with responsible and efficient consumption. In addition, Spain has most of the finest and most nutritious strawberries.

Strawberry season starts in April and you can find fresh strawberries until May. However, there is also a late production quota which allows us to enjoy the delicious flavor and benefits of the properties of strawberries until the month of June. However, from March to May, almost 80% of all strawberries of the year will be harvested.

It is true that some strawberry samples begin to be exhibited since December. However, these strawberries come in small quantities and the fruit is still not at its best point of quality. Plus, those off-season strawberries are significantly more expensive.

When the strawberry season really begins, you will notice it in the far more affordable price, but, above all, during these months, what will catch your eye will be the bright red color and the beautiful appearance of these fruits.

Since when to give strawberries to children

If until a few years ago it was believed that certain allergenic foods (eggs, fish, strawberries ...) should be introduced as late as possible, today the studies available say that, on the contrary, the late introduction of foods does not reduce the risk. allergy (and in some cases it is even counterproductive). According to the international recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), weaning must begin in the sixth month completed. Therefore, after 6 months of age, it is not necessary to follow particular and rigid schemes, but the various foods can be introduced according to the preferences of the family and the child.

Whole strawberries, or even ones cut into large pieces, can be a choking hazard for infants and even small children. Instead of slicing them into slices, try cutting them into small pieces or making your own pureed strawberries. Wash 8 to 10 strawberries and remove the stems. Place in a high-powered blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

Berries, including strawberries, can be an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. But since any baby can develop allergies, and what you choose to feed your baby can impact his or her chances of developing one, it's important to introduce new foods with some caution.

Allergy to strawberries

When your baby has a food allergy, his body reacts to the proteins in the foods he has eaten. Reactions can range from mild to very severe. If your child shows signs of a food allergy, you may notice the following symptoms:

  • urticaria or itchy rash
  • swelling
  • wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • pale skin
  • loss of consciousness

In severe cases, multiple parts of the body are affected at the same time. This is known as anaphylaxis and is considered to be life-threatening. If your child has trouble breathing after eating a new food, he or she calls emergency services immediately.
